Go Team Coaching: It’s Not Like A Family

Posted by go-team-coaching | 22 December 2017 | Experts & Champions

It’s an old adage that “you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family”. In this short piece, Coach Kris Herman talks to coaches about their ability to “pick” the people on their team.

Just like setting the goals and defining the culture of a program, team or season, getting the right people in the room at the start is key. We know that.

Taking the time to understand that you, as a leader, have much control over who’s there is not as common.

It’s not chance. You get to pick, even when it feels as if you don’t, usually you do. You can define the standards that are acceptable, you can be very clear about who does what, when and where. You can listen and make being in your program something that “the good ones” want to do.

Even in geographically constrained town or rec ball, you as a coach have a hand in the “who” of your team. Helping to shape the behaviors, not just the skills, is within your range.

Teams are made, not born. Go.
